Swimming Lessons - Part Six

"Fish, go away," Skyler said, his voice however, held little conviction.  The swimmer had seated himself on the side of the bench making some of the higher octaves unreachable.

"Am I bothering you?" Justin was smiling and refused to move even after Skyler pushed at him roughly, yet without much ambition.  He didn't really want Justin to leave.  After the confession he felt that having Justin around was just a normal thing.  Familiar.  Like having Daphne around.

It had been two days and the lessons in the pool had turned into make-out sessions in the water, a tactic which was slowly allowing him to relax.  Justin was persuasive and controlling with his advances, but he allowed Skyler room to get used to the whole idea.  Justin knew that would be the greatest obstacle.  Skyler still hadn't gotten around to telling Daphne about the newly formed relationship.  He wasn't sure how to tell her.

"Maybe."

"Liar."  Justin was smirking triumphantly.  He ran a hand through Skyler's' white hair, ruffling it gently.  He pressed their foreheads together.  Skyler watched Justin's almond eyes, his own green ones reflected against the glassy sheen.  "You should really be playing right now," Justin murmured.

Skyler smiled just a small bit.  Justin's widened a fraction.  Even with the relationship it was still difficult to get Skyler to loosen up to show much emotion around him.  A smile, however slight, was a triumph for him really.  "You should stop distracting me then."

Justin ran his hand through Skyler's soft hair again.  "Now, do you really want that?"

"Now, honestly, could the two of you get a room?  This is a public place after all, anyone could walk in on you.  Wouldn't that be an interesting conversation?"  Skyler instantly pulled back a reasonable distance from Justin blushing profusely, caught in the act.

Daphne was smiling with amusement.  "You're adorable when you blush, Sky."

"She's right there.  You're almost irresistible," Justin agreed in a very suggestive and seductive tone.  He pulled one of Skyler's hands into his own and laced their fingers together Skyler allowing him without protest.  Skyler was too preoccupied trying to figure out why Daphne wasn't raving at finding out about their relationship like this.  Unless....

"You told her!" growled Skyler pulling his hand immediately from Justin's and scrambling to his feet.  His smile had long since faded, and Justin's had as well.  The other teen was looking up at him with surprise and confusion.

He patted the bench.  "Sit back down," he said gently, "I miss you already."

Daphne sighed and rolled her eyes at them dramatically.  She set down her books on one of the rusting music stands.  "Don't get all dramatic, I made him tell me.  I knew you weren't about too, and I also knew something was up.  It's easier to deal with him," she pointed offhandedly at Justin, "than it is with you."

"What's that supposed to mean?" he snapped indignantly.  He was not about to be outranked by the stupid fish.  Alright, he knew he shouldn't think that way now that they were kind of dating.  He knew it wasn't fair, but he still felt that way.  Just because they were dating it didn't stop Justin from being oblivious.

She just shook her head and tossed her red locks over her shoulder.  "This is exactly what I mean.  I knew you weren't about to admit it any time soon, and I like to be up-to-date in all the things going on in your life, Sky.  Justin was the easier person to get it out of.  He just can't say no to you."

Justin just smiled and shrugged.  "C'mon, don't be mad at me.  Like she said she forced me to do it."

Grudgingly Skyler sat back down. He wasn't, however, about to let Justin get all over him again.  He growled threateningly when the swimmer tried to move closer.  Immediately he backed off, still smiling like an idiot.  Jerk.  Obviously he wasn't daunted by prospects of Skyler ripping him limp from limp.

"So this is why you were so determined to give me swimming lessons," Skyler said resignedly.  His head was hanging a bit by this time.  Thoughts were running rampant through his mind refusing to organize themselves.  He'd never really thought about everything that had happened in the past few days up until this point.  Everything was connecting itself now.

While he was trying to organize his thoughts Justin had inched himself closer.  He wrapped his hands around an angered Skyler, who despite that didn't try to push him away.  He wouldn't admit that even when angry he still wanted Justin near him.  "Yeah it was," he said with a frown.  "I was hoping to get to talk to you more, but Coach really did tell me to deal with you.  Are you mad at me?"

After a few seconds of silence Skyler shook his head.  How could he be angry over that?  Actually, he could easily be furious over it if he wanted too, he just didn't.

Justin was probably smiling like an idiot now.  The swimmer squeezed his shoulders happily.  "That's good.  I have to go make practice, I'm already late."  He ruffled Skyler's hair slightly, getting an annoyed growl from the teen.  "I'll see you tomorrow right, Sky."  It wasn't a question.  "See you around, Daphne."

The door shut behind him with a loud click.  There was a few minutes of silence where neither of the two said anything to each other.  Daphne absentmindedly examined her recently manicured nails while Skyler just looked down at his feet.  "Ready to go?" she finally asked to break the tension.

"Yeah, I guess."  Skyler stood up and slung his bag over his shoulder.  Daphne retrieved her books.  Skyler ran a hand over the piano keys once before they left the room, making sure to lock it behind them.

--

Moodily Skyler picked at his food.  The room was completely silent with the exception of silver utensils against expensive china.  Daphne ignored Skyler as they eat, used to his mood during dinner.  He wasn't exactly what you'd call pleasant company and neither was their father really.

After minutes that ticked by slow and tense their father cleared his throat and set down his silverware.  "Your mother and I need to speak to the both of you."  he said in his voice that was both bored and disapproving.

Letting the silence stretch on Daphne set down her fork as well politely.  Skyler on the other hand absentmindedly jabbed at his helping of food with his fork.  His head rested bored on his hand and he made no signs that he had heard the man speak.

With a disapproving frown and pursed lips he cleared his throat again.  Skyler knew he was angering the man but didn't care.  He wasn't about to show any signs of respect.  Actually infuriating him was more amusing than anything else.  However, he was used to the disrespect and continued without him.

"Yes, Sir?"  asked Daphne politely to take his mind off of Skyler so he could continue.

He smiled slightly at his prized daughter.  "Your mother is pregnant," he told her.

At that Skyler's fork clattered onto his plate loudly, fallen from a hand that was now hanging uselessly in the air.  At this point he was clearly paying attention looking between his father and his wife on the other end.  Everyone was looking at him now - not that there were that many people - but he didn't care.  He just looked between them for any sign that this was a joke.

"When did you find out?" he demanded.

Mr. Donovan glared at him.  "Just this morning," he said regardless in a calm, yet mighty tone.  "Don't look at me like that.  I expect you to be pleased about this news."

"O-Of course," Skyler choked out.  The food that hadn't looked appetizing before looked absolutely repulsing now.  He couldn't even consider eating it.  A dizzying sick-feeling washed over him and his brain was in overdrive.  "May I be excused?"

The man nodded disapprovingly and Skyler bolted for the door.  Shutting the door to the hall behind him he managed to make it too his room before he knees began to wobble.  He shut the door behind himself standing with his hands pressed firmly against it resting his head back on the wood.

Skyler panted heavily closing his eyes and trying to relax.  This would be the end of him he just knew it.  If that baby was a boy....he wouldn't live to see his next birthday.  Both parents had been looking for a reason to get rid of him for years, especially the woman who insisted he call her mother.

So Skyler didn't get along with his father, despised the man actually, but though he was disapproving and easily angered by his son's attitude at least he didn't necessarily want him dead.  His ability on the piano was the the only thing left of the woman he'd had an affair with for years.  An affair that had produced a fiery tempered yet skilled young boy.

Martha, the woman who called herself his mother had never quite recovered from the betrayal.  She still stood loyally by her husband and rather took her resentment out on the result of the affair.  Of course that hadn't occurred to Skyler until the day he found out that she wasn't really his mother.  He had just always thought that she was just a hateful woman.

However when he was six he heard the maids talking about how she wasn't really his mother.  He wasn't exactly sure what he felt by that event but he hadn't liked it, and had believed the tale completely.  He saw his entire life as a lie and ran away from home the next day, only to be caught and drug back home.

Security had increased after that and he'd never gotten the chance to try and run again.  All of it had been fuel to make Skyler the hot-tempered person he was to that day.

So he didn't like either of his 'parents' really.  At least his father however had fought to keep him alive.  The fact that he was a boy and could play the piano were the only things keeping him from being killed.  His father needed someone to take over the business when he finally died, and that someone had to be male.  He also wanted to keep the last remnant of Skyler's real mother around.

However....if the baby proved to be a boy chances were his playing ability wouldn't be enough to keep him alive.  Skyler's knees gave out from under him and he collapsed to the floor, mind a storm of thoughts.  What was he going to do?
I don't really like this chapter. I really didn't turn out to good. It's just a filler though, and lets you see into Skyler's life and past a little bit more. That's probably why I don't like it, I don't particularly find it interesting, but it's needed for the events I have planned for later on.

Hope someone enjoys it though.
